Following the Emir of Qatar, Sisi also urged his citizens to prepare for the "worst-case scenario"

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi explicitly warned his citizens during a speech at the Armed Forces' symposium commemorating the October 1973 Victory, stating that tensions in the country have increased significantly over the past five to six months.

Sisi stated, "I swear to God, I am not trying to frighten you, but you cannot stand up this time." In his speech, he said that regional pressures and domestic developments could create a chaos similar to 2011 in Egypt, and this time the country might not be able to recover.

"Protect your country from this conspiracy"

Addressing the citizens directly in his speech, Sisi said, "Protect your country from this conspiracy… I am not saying protect the president." He also emphasized that the constitution is inviolable, warning against the "psychological warfare" and misinformation campaigns conducted via social media.

During the symposium where the speech was delivered, Sisi reiterated that Egypt has no hidden agenda against Israel and stated that he defends a two-state solution. However, his primary message focused on the possibility of domestic instability.

Similar warning from Qatar

Sisi's remarks came a few days after Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani's call to "be ready for the worst-case scenarios." The Emir of Qatar had stated that institutions and citizens must be prepared due to attacks on energy infrastructures in the Gulf, risks in the Strait of Hormuz, and a possible escalation in the region.

What does it mean?

Sisi's speech clearly reveals the concern over a repetition of the 2011-2013 process in Egypt. Reminding that Egypt paid a heavy political and economic price after the popular movements in 2011, Sisi gave the message, "If we experience the same thing this time, we cannot survive."

The concern that regional tensions (especially developments along the Iran and Gulf axis) could threaten Egypt's internal stability has become evident with the warnings coming from both Cairo and Doha.
