FREENEWS.TR EXCLUSIVE REPORT: Baku's Heavy Slap to Tehran's Insolent Outburst – Whom Were Aliyev's Messages Targeting?

EXCLUSIVE ANALYSIS | Freenews.tr

A striking statement written by Igbal Aghazade, Chairman of the Azerbaijan Umid Party, which sheds light on the rising diplomatic tension in the South Caucasus, reveals the full background of the recent crisis on the Baku-Tehran axis. In particular, the harsh responses given by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to the insolent and humiliating attitude of Mohsen Rezaee, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, are reshaping the balances in the region.

As Freenews.tr, we have compiled all the details and the background of these strategic statements that have been debated for days in the public opinion of Azerbaijan and Turkey.

1. The Visit That Ignited the Crisis and Who Is Mohsen Rezaee?

On September 29, 2026, an Azerbaijani delegation headed by Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev visited Tehran. Meetings were held with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Minister of Petroleum Mohsen Paknejad, and Minister of Energy Abbas Aliabadi. However, during this visit, all contacts except with Pezeshkian—who remains a limited figure in the shadow of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) within the Iranian administration—remained at the protocol level.

Mohsen Rezaee, one of the figures the delegation met with, is not just a politician; he is a terrorist on the international wanted list and former commander-in-chief of the IRGC due to the bloody terrorist attack on the Jewish cultural center in Buenos Aires in 1994, which resulted in the deaths of 85 people.

Rezaee has been known for his scandalous statements against Azerbaijan since the past:

2021: He argued that Iran should enter Karabakh and control the corridors.

2023: He claimed that Azerbaijan-Israel relations were a preparation for an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.

2025: He targeted trade routes through the Zangezur corridor and issued threats.

September 23, 2026: He announced that airports of countries cooperating with the USA would be closed to Iranian flights.

2. On-Target Responses from President Ilham Aliyev

President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan responded without delay and at the highest level to the insolent attitude Mohsen Rezaee adopted against Azerbaijan behind closed doors and before the press. Aliyev's messages refuted one by one the manipulations the Tehran administration has maintained for years:

The Weapon Lie Debunked: In response to Rezaee's claim that "I was the one who ensured weapons were provided to Azerbaijan in 1993," Aliyev reminded him of historical facts by saying, "We bought all the weapons with our own money, no one gave us free weapons." (According to historical records, Iran sold the weapons at a price far above the world market at that time and rejected military aid under pressure from Rezaee).

Superpower Emphasis: Clear boundaries were drawn against Rezaee's tutelary rhetoric over the region: "There are two superpowers in the world: the USA and China; we have signed strategic agreements with them. We do not need a protector."

Emphasis on Loneliness: Tehran's hypocrisy regarding humanitarian aid was rubbed in its face with the words, "When we had one million refugees, not a single person reached out a hand to us."

Provocation Channels: Destructive activities carried out day and night in the Azerbaijani language through Iran's "Sahar" television and similar mediums were criticized in harsh language.

Two-Faced Politics: Secret support given to Armenia and Karabakh separatists was recalled, emphasizing that Baku has never played a double game.

3. The Dirty Perception Operation Carried Out Through Turkey

Igbal Aghazade draws attention to a very critical detail in his analysis: None of these harsh messages given by President Aliyev were directed at Turkey. On the contrary, it was a historic lesson taught to the Tehran administration and Mohsen Rezaee, who ignored diplomatic boundaries and ethical rules in an official meeting.

However, unfortunately, both certain circles in Turkey and superficial political commentators in Azerbaijan immediately tried to use this situation to target Turkey-Azerbaijan relations. The best response to these speculations was the following message published by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan himself:
