Öğrenci yaralanmaları da yaklaşık 170’i buldu.

Maddi hasarın on milyonlarca avroyu bulduğu tahmin ediliyor.

Student Rebellion in France: Nearly 500 High Schools Closed, Over 5,000 Arrests

FreeNews.TR / Protests launched by high school students in France against educational conditions led to the closure of hundreds of schools, thousands of arrests, and severe material damage across the country in the early days of October 2026. The Ministry of Education announced on Monday, October 5, that 400 to 500 out of 3,700 high schools were fully or partially closed.

The protests began around September 17 at a high school in Créteil, a Paris suburb, over complaints of teacher shortages and poorly maintained buildings. They quickly spread to cities such as Lyon, Marseille, Lille, Toulouse, and Nantes. Students cite overcrowded classrooms, long schedules, staffing shortages, and the poor condition of school buildings as reasons. In some places, demonstrations turned into barricade setups, burning trash cans, and attacks on schools. Minister of Education Édouard Geffray stated that 24 schools have been burned or looted and 78 educational staff members have been injured since the beginning of the protests. Student injuries have reached approximately 170.

According to Ministry of Interior data, over 5,000 people have been detained since the beginning of the movement; about 85% of them are minors. Police used tear gas and rubber bullets in some demonstrations. Incidents such as a teacher being soaked in gasoline and beaten in La Ciotat, and a young person losing his hand after picking up a stun grenade thrown by police, also occurred. Material damage is estimated to reach tens of millions of euros.

Government spokesperson Maud Bregeon said the priority is to “restore order.” Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu instructed local authorities to prioritize resolving long-term teacher shortages and vacant positions. Meanwhile, high school student unions and some teacher organizations called for new demonstrations for Tuesday, October 6, on the grounds that no concrete steps have been taken. The Ministry of Education stated that thanks to dialogue, the number of affected schools on Monday decreased partially compared to the previous week.

While officials consider some of the students’ demands legitimate, they describe the acts of violence as “urban violence” and claim that the leftist opposition is fueling the movement. Demonstrators, on the other hand, argue that the police use disproportionate force; it was reported that internal investigations have been launched into at least three incidents. The protests coincided with France’s efforts to close its budget deficit and plans to cut public spending.
